Breathable Wall Assemblies

Hygroscopic materials are materials which absorb and release moisture from the air and are sometimes said to “breathe.” This quality can facilitate removal of unwanted moisture in a wall assembly, and is a critical characteristic of traditional construction such as stone masonry. Altering the breathability of a wall assembly via new intervention can have damaging impacts. Building science investigation is recommended.
