Solid-to-Void Ratio

The ratio between opaque walls and glazing has a significant impact on the heating and cooling loads of a building. Too much glazing contributes to overheating on warm and/or sunny days due to the greenhouse effect and also poor heat retention during cool weather. However, too little glazing can increase dependence on artificial lighting. Ideal solid-to-void ratios vary depending on the location.
